So anyway, things finally started looking up, and I got little clues that the GOP fat cats were interested in my brand of down home industrial-strength wholesome values because they had a serious lack of good star-power front guys. So these big shots came sniffing around here on their annual boondoggle cruises, and my job was to charm them, and – what can I say? Men are just so simple.
So by then I could just taste it.

Truck is partying like there’s no tomorrow. I won’t tell you any more about the bus vandalism thing –– I’m saving that for my book –– but let me just tell you, you don’t know the half of it. This kid was out of control. And Brystol: everything I did was wrong, she was so angry about everything, and she had to pick this exact moment to start pushing her independence with all the parties and booze and drugs. That summer of 2007 it was just so hard to keep it all out of the papers –– I had to use up so many favors, but I had to, or my big chance might not have come around again. Every time I’d check in at home there was some new boo hoo disaster, some party gone wrong, or a ton of stuff that the so-called responsible adults I’d left in charge just hadn’t managed to handle.
Well, it just all got out of control. We had a huge blow-up after that bad patch during summer (no, no, you’ll just have to wait for my book). I sent Truck away for the school year and then everything settled down, and I thought I could get back to work.
But no, everyone still had his whine of a pet grievance: Podd always felt ignored. Brystol was still a thundercloud. Mom and Dad were always jaw-boning about something. My sister and her ex kept sucking the hours out of my day. But –– not my problems, I told myself: I had to concentrate on the one job that keeps this family afloat, and I did.
